Neighbor Dave and I have discussed all summer trying to make a handle cam mount for my gopro (older wide / non HD version).
After seeing some of the posts and cool shots recently on the forums we created our first prototype recently and here are some of the details, learnings and some pictures.
Proto v1 Details:
-10' conduit pvc 1/2" pipe attached to handle (used an old learner handle) on a 70' rope -gopro attached initially for first video test at furthest away from rider ~ 12' (10' of pipe and 1-2' handle extension to rider body) -gopro moved after a few minutes to mid point of pvc ~ 7' from rider (5' midpoint of pipe, 2' handle extension) -gopro left at midpoint for pictures below
Proto v1 learnings:
-10' is way too long - adds too much weight on rope and not needed with wide angle lense on gopro -on crashes, force on gopro bends camera slightly forward on axis and needs to be readjusted before starting again; need to find way to tighten further (hand tightened as much as possible) -add flotation to pvc - thinking small noodle around entire pipe?
Proto v2 next steps:
- Go with 5' length of same material pipe
- slit cut pipe entire length to be able to "stretch" pipe opening to insert rope in or extract rope out easily to make handle mount removeable from rope while on boat
- add flotation to pvc
